Cray Valley ABC opened on the 17th April 2006 by head coach Oliver Rutherford. After spending several years involved in boxing serving as both a coach and judge at other clubs he was surprised to find that there was not yet a club formed in the "CRAY" area and so after a lot of hard work and help from the community Cray Valley ABC was formed

Cray Valley boxers are trained by Oliver Rutherford and Gary Lait. Between them they have amassed many years of experience and can offer a wide range of fitness and skill techniques. They hope to involve as many local participants as they can and secure the foundations of what they hope to be a long standing, successful and competitive club

OLIVER RUTHERFORD
ROLE: Head Coach

Did you box:
Yes, ulicesnsed.

Why did you start coaching:
I was given the oppurtunity to coach at Danson Youth when I was watching my son box at a Marvals Lane show. It was an offer I couldn't turn down.

Worst aspect of being a coach:
Not spending as much time as I would like with my wife and kids (although my son does box for the club) Boxing is a sport which you have to give alot of time for. Its pretty much all or nothing as a head coach

Best aspect of being a coach:
Watching the boxer achive, regsrdless of what level it is.

What makes your club/boxers stand out from other clubs:
The club is still at its early stages - its raw and the facilities aren't exactly the best in the country but I think thats irrelevant when you look at what we are like as a team,

What kind of boxing do you teach:
We dont have a specific stlye, it completly depends from person to person.

Has Amatuer Boxing improved:

I think its improved massively, the evidence is all there. Look at the Olympics, England had 1 boxer at Athens 2004 and now we have 8 going to Bejing 2008, if thats not an improvement I don't know what is. The sport is alot safer then it used to be. The boxers are taken care of.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
My brother got me into boxing and I havent looked back

My third bout which was against a three time narional champ. That was a real test of heart and will.

Best memory in boxing :
Its got to be getting to the finals of both the Golden Gloves and Golden Belts.

Worst memory in boxing :
First loss (Ashley has a 13/4 record)
I didnt want to let my record down. But I worked hard to make sure I wouldn't lose so easily next time.

What is it you most like about your club

The coach's are brilliant, I also really enjoy our training sessions.

Titles won::
None yet... But I'm working on it.

What boxer are you like:
Larry Holmes, even though he was a heavyweight he threw fast puches that hurt and his technique was second to none.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
Boxing runs in my family. My uncle boxed and my dad is head coach.

Toughest Bout So Far:
Ahmed Patterson at the London Hiloton. He was very fast and strong. I won the first round but he soon woke up and gave me a bit of a beating.

Best memory in boxing :
My first win, which wasn't so long ago. It was a tough bout and he kept laying into me but I was able to work him out and got the win.

Worst memory in boxing :
It's the frurstration of trying to do something I know I can do but constantly getting it wrong. Although I always end up laughing at my frustrations.

What is it you most like about your club:
The fact that everyone is really friendly apart from when we spar. Thats how it should be.

Ambitions in Boxing:
Getting a winning streak, some recognition and an England Vest

Chris Eubank because he liked a scrap and had a very good punch resisitance

Why Did You Start Boxing:
Don't really know why I started. I just always liked the sport.

Toughest Bout So Far:
There are too many, I couldn't pick out one bout in paticular. Thats the thing about Amateur Boxing - there is no such thing as an easy bout. But thats what makes it a great sport

Best memory in boxing :
Being the underdog and winning is a special feeling.

Worst memory in boxing :
Losing.

What is it you most like about your club:
I really like the coaches and there are alot of boys to spar with here.

Ambitions in Boxing:
To beat some opponents that I have already lost to. And I would like to do well in one of the major championshops

What boxer are you like:
Ricky Hatton becuase I love his style and I like to think I can pull off the same shots as him.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
I have always loved the sport but it was my brother who got me into training.

Toughest Bout So Far:
My first bout was very hard.

Best memory in boxing :
Stopping a lad in the second round of my second fight.

Worst memory in boxing :
Losing my first bout was pretty hard to deal with. It takes strength to come back from a defeat, especially when its your first bout.

What is it you most like about your club:
The training is top quality at Cray Valley, but its the atmposphere and people that make the club.

Ambitions in Boxing:
To be one of the best and always train hard.
