Paul Chapman
ROLE: Head Coach

Did you box:
Yes, as a Junior and Senior

When & why did you start coaching:
When I was still boxing I got mugged and my arm got broken, I had 3 more bouts after that but eventaully had to stop because of the it. Coaching was the inevitable answer. Its been 22 years now and I don't regret it.

Worst aspect of being a coach:
(Laughs) there are quite a few, to many to choose from in fact - girls (stopping my boys from boxing), booze, fags, bad decsions. The list goes on.

Best aspect of being a coach
:

Just the enjoyment of it all. Seing the lads perform, whether they win, lose or draw, as long as they give 100% and go out to win.

What makes your club/boxers stand out from other clubs:
It's a relaxed club that maintains a strong level of discipline. And we never put boxers out who aren't fit, we are very strict about that.

What kind of boxing do you teach:
Our club doesn't have any paticular style, we tend to teach whatever style suits the boy.

Has Amatuer Boxing improved:
It's improved a bit but there's still a very long way to go. There has to be funding for the smaller clubs. And something I feel quite strongly about is the lack of squad training. I'm not talking about an elite standerd, I'm not even talking about boxing for a squad, just letting boxers get the chance to train for a regional squad. I think it would give so many of them a big lift.

DOB: 24 September 1991

Number of years boxing:
7 Years

Titles won:
Cadet Champion
Sout East Golden Belt Champion
National Golden Belt Champion

What boxer are you like:
Valuev just because of his size. I'm
not 7 ft or anything but I am relativly very big for my age & weight category.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
I always wanted to box, it's in my blood, my uncles boxed, my grandad boxed and my dad is one of the coaches at Danson Youth.

Toughest Bout So Far:
Probably a lad called Bert Truby because he was strong, fast and more experianced then me.

Best memory in boxing:
Winning my first bout. I was only 11 or 12 at the time and I was soo nervous before the bout but that made winning it all the more better

Worst memory in boxing:
The first time I lost a fight was bad. I found it very difficult to overcome but I didn't dwell on it too much which was good. I was back in the ring within three months.

What is it you most like about your club
:
The atmosphere here is very friendly but thats balanced with training that really challanges you. All the boxers here are competative which means sparring is always hard.

Ambitions in Boxing:
Turn professional and then win a lonsdale belt. Thats the belt for me.

DOB: 14 June 1988

Number of years boxing:
5 Years

Titles won:
2 x London CYPN Champion
London JABA Champion
Haringey Box Cup Gold Medalist

What boxer are you like:
I've got my own stlye. I definatly think 4 rounds suit my style more then 3 though. I like to work out my opppnent for the opening rounds.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
Just because my mates went and I wanted to keep fit.

Toughest Bout So Far:
Jimmy McCann (Kettering SOB). I was stopped in the second round. He was reigning National Champion & fast. It was a big learning curve for me.

Best memory in boxing:
I don't think I could point to one paticular moment. I always enjoy winning... I don't think I will get bored of that

Worst memory in boxing:
Losing 4-3 in the Junior ABAs. To get so far and then to lost a bout as close as that is pretty hard.

What is it you most like about your club:
There's a real friendly atmosphere here and we have the best coaches in the world (he says standing next to one of his coaches)

Ambitions in Boxing:
Keep winning and see where it takes me. I don't want to be to over or under ambitious. Although to box for England is something I'd love to do.

DOB: 9 July 1994

Number of years boxing:
3 Year

Titles won:
None yet

What boxer are you like:
Ricky Hatton because like him I keep going and pushing (not literally). I have a very busy workrate.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
Both my dad and grandad boxed so I thought who am I to end the tradition. But I always wanted to box anyway,

Toughest Bout So Far:
Wayne Caress (South Norward) on a Cray Valley show. I stopped him but he came out fast & hard. He was stro-ng & we were both landing big shots. One of us was always going down.

Best memory in boxing:
I thinks its probably stopping Wayne Caress. As I said it was such a tough bout, and the first of the night, To come out on top was brilliant.

Worst memory in boxing:
Losing my first bout to Jack Lawrence of Lynn ABC. It was really close and could of gone either way.

What is it you most like about your club:
We train hard and all push ourselves to be our best. The coaches are always pushing you aswell. Almost to the edge of bullying (laughs), but we know it's for our own good.

Ambitions in Boxing:
I would like to win the ABAs, as a junior or senior. Both would be nice.
