Sam Mullins
ROLE: Head Junior Coach

At 32 Sam Mullins is very young when considering some of his achievements as a coach which include developing the skills of 2012 hopeful Obed Mbwakongo. Though not the Head Coach at the Lynn he commands a lot of respect amongst his boxers and is helping to start a rebirth of the club that has rich history and tradition.

Up until quite recently Sam was a boxer of high pedigree, reaching 2 national finals and winning various London titles for his club Fisher. After his last shot at the ABAs he became a coach at Fisher in 2000. Sam only left Fisher in March 2008 following a notorious fall out with Fishers head coach. Steve Hiser. When discussing the matter with Sam he was quick to say that he has ‘the utmost respect for Steve’ going on to explain that the reason for their fallout was because they ‘didn’t see eye to eye on certain matters’. What perhaps made Sam’s

cross over from Fisher to the Lynn controversial was that 8 of Fishers top boxers followed him over (including the Mbwakongo brothers and Golden Gloves finalist Ryan Jackson.). This, Sam explains, was not his doing or even his suggestions, the boys followed by choice.

Some have criticised Sam’s decision to change clubs noting that Obed Mbwakongo’s loss at the London ABA finals was partly down to this change, but this is an idea Sam argues against heavily. Obed’s loss, Sam argues, was merely down to the fact that his opponent (a Hungarian international) is a top quality boxer and Obed just happened to have a bad night. And as far as the change is concerned, whilst he still has strong feeling for Fisher, the club he boxed for as a boy, he only wishes he came over to the Lynn sooner

National Golden Gloves Champ 2007
London Golden Glove Champ
London Junior ABA Champ

What boxer are you like:
I aspire to be like Sugar Ray Leonard and Mayweather. Like them I have good footwork and movement and I'm more then comfortable on the ropes. I like attacking and going forward but can also box going back.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
My brother Elvis boxed for Fisher. Seeing him win made me want to box.

Toughest Bout So Far:
Brett Beadon (Repton). It was a close fight but he won it because of his work rate and use of his long arms.

Best memory in boxing:
Winning the Goldon Gloves in Knott-ingley. It was my third and last attempt at the GGs and I'm glad to have won it quite easily.

Worst memory in boxing:
Getting robbed against Pat Cash (from Home Counties) in the Junior ABA pre quaters. Everyone thought I'd won, even his coach apologiesed to my coach for the poor decision.

What you most like about your club
:
Top coaches, they are good both technical stuff and motivating you. I'm also proud to box for a club with a big history. I want to work hard to help get the Lynns reputation big again.

Ambitions in Boxing:
2012 olympics with my brother & to be a top pro known for his amatuer rep.

European Box Offs Semi Finals

What boxer are you like:
Sugar Ray Leonard becasue I'm fast and flashy, and have good movement. I have the same attitude outside the ring aswell - I'm respectful.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
My dad boxed for St Georges, I wanted to give it a try and started at Fisher, and them moved to the Lynn with my coach Sam Mullins.

Toughest Bout So Far:
Golden Gloves finals in Knottingley against Henry Thomas (Darlington). He was strong & hit hard. He beat me convincely. Next time I'll beat him.

Best memory in boxing:
Winning semis of the Golden Gloves. It meant I was going to my first finals. I dindn't box well that day but still won.

Worst memory in boxing:
My third fight against the boy I lost my first fight to. I was expecting to beat him this time round but didn't. I never got another chance to revenge my lost which makes it worse.

What is it you most like about your club:
Good atmosphere, at the Lynn you can have a laugh but still get work done. And Sam Mullins aswell, I followed him here after all.

Ambitions in Boxing:
2012 Olympics and then turn pro. I definitely want to win the senior ABAs, but I'll have to to box at 2012.

Titles won:
London Golden Gloves
South East Golden Gloves

What boxer are you like:
Ricky Hatton beacsue I've got abig workrate, I like thowing hooks and body shots. I also like coming forward.

Why did You start boxing:
My brother boxer for Samuel Montagu ABC and I really wanted to give it a go. I went to Montagu first but came to the Lynn with my trainer Mick.

Worst memory in boxing:
Going out in Semis of GGs against Luke Turkhead. It's always hard when your so close to getting to the finals.

Best memory in boxing:
My first bout (at a Nemisis show). I stopped him in first round. I felt proud but a bit bad for him at the same time.

Toughest Bout So Far:
Turkhead in Golden Gloves, he was strong and it was proper toe to toe stuff. He came out on top though. It demaged my confidence - losing to a boxer with a smilar stlye to me. But I learnt that you have to change your stlye for some opponents.

What is it you most like about your club:
There are loads of coaches who have there different specialties

Ambitions in Boxing:
Win Juniors and Senior ABAs
