Miguel's Boxing Gym - founded in 1999 by ex-champ brothers - is in the heart of the vibrant multi-cultural inner city area of Brixton, south London. The brothers took over dilapidated railway arches and worked hard to transform them into their vision of a gym with a difference. Although renovation work is ongoing, it opened as an amateur boxing club in the summer of 2001.

On offer at Miguel's Boxing Gym, through the tuition and dedication of our trainers, coaches and other associated professionals, is a positive direction in sports, fitness and life, as well as help to enhance your physical and general health. Even though boxing is, in itself, an individual sport, if you like the idea of making new friends, with similar interests to yourself, then Miguel's Boxing Camp is an excellent place to go.
Everyone at the club are extremely friendly, and if joining they will quickly help you become part of the team.

Miguel’s are affiliated to the Amateur Boxing Association of England and have already helped potential champs climb the ladder towards greater success.

ROLE: Coach

Did you box:
Yes, boxed for 3 years as an Amatuer down at South Norton ABC and had 12 bouts as a pro.

Why did you start coaching:
I've always loved the game and sport is in my blood. When I stopped boxing as a pro I considered it my only option.

Worst aspect of being a coach:
I think its when for whatever reason your lads just stop turning up. It might be becuause of a girl, or they've discovered booze or their just bored of it. But when you put the effort in you want them to maintain some dedication.

Best aspect of being a coach:
Its a bit of a cliche but seeing guys coming through the doors and hel- ping them turn from boys to men.

What makes your club/boxers stand out from other clubs:
Its not a pressure situation at our club. Some clubs make it their way or the highway but here we are accomadatiing. We dont have favourites or let boxers get beat up in sparring. We take care of them.

What kind of boxing do you teach:
I wouldnt point to one paticular style, because like I said we're an accomodating club and thats applicable to stlyes. But we are firm on teaching the basics at first so they have a good foundation. And when I say basics I mean the idea of hitting without being hit.

Has Amatuer Boxing improved:

Of course it has. The ABAE are good with coaching courses & London ABA are always responsive. But clubs need to more of their money.

Number of years boxing:
3 Years

Titles won:
None Yet

What boxer are you like:
Ricky Hatton, because I throw pun- ches like him. My best is the left hook to the body.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
I use to get into alot of fights and it never scared me. I started boxing for a laugh but after 3 clubs I found Miguels and now love the sport.

Toughest Bout So Far:
My first. It was his third & he show-
ed that experiance when he came back stronger after a first round standing count. I did win though.

Best memory in boxing:
I've always loved learing, so its probably the moment when something your learing just clicks.

Worst memory in boxing:
Saying sorry when I hit someone. It still happens all the time. I think its because everyone here's so close and there's so much respect. I just feel bad when I smack them

What is it you most like about your club
:
The respect of the team. No ones left out, there's no showing off, no one gets beaten up in sparring. The coaches are just very respectful here... and also very adaptable.

Ambitions in Boxing:
To win the WBA, WBC & WBO belts.

Titles won:
None yet.

What boxer are you like:
Oscar De La Hoya, in style and personality.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
I wanted to learn how to fight, to optain good fighting skills and delvelop so I could turn pro.

Best memory in boxing:
Funnily enough it was a bout in which I was robbed blind. I outworked and outboxed the guy for the entire fight. Even though I lost I boxed the best I have ever boxed and was proud of myself.

Toughest Bout So Far:
It was in Scotland last year. I lost on points against a man infront of his supporters. The crowd were extreamly hostile and I had to deal with their racist taunts.

Worst memory in boxing:
Losing to a noive quite convincingly. That was hard to deal with.

What is it you most like about your club:
The coaches here are top quality and well qualified and because there are 6 of them you always get alot of attention, which is important when tyrying to develop your boxing skills.

Ambitions in Boxing:
Turn proffesional and win titles.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
I was a kickboxing for quite a while and wanted to give boxing a try.

Best memory in boxing:
When the training sesions end.

Worst memory in boxing:
All the times I've been in the ring with my coach... especially on the pads, I get worked hard.

What is good about your club:
Whilst the coaches are very relaxed and respectful they always push you to your phyiscal edge

Ambitions in Boxing:
I think just to win a title of sorts would be a really nice achivement.
