  Bill Thomas
ROLE: Head Coach

St Georges has a long history. With the clubs opening dating back to 1952, it’s a club of rich tradition and from its first years through the sixties and seventies it was producing Junior and Senior Cham-pions. Sadly by the 1980s the club was at its knees, with no carded boxers, no head coach and the location at the St Gorges Baby Clinic which sat rather mockingly at the back St Georges Town Hall (the clubs original home).

Desperate for a coach the secretary at the time, Bert Liley, found the man that would eventually bring St Georges back to its prime training at local club Arbour Youth. At 25 years of age Bill Thomas was a very young to be named head coach and with just 3 years judging experience and 7 years as a Junior it was a risky appointment. But within two years

Bill had begun to produce some decent boxers and even hosted a few shows.

Bert Liley’s risk paid of and St Georges, despite its problems with locations, is back to full swing. And thanks to Bill Thomas teaching philosophy that focuses on a respect towards his boxers the club has a very warm atmosphere. This is all the more impressive consider-ing the great mix of cultures at the club (including Russians, Poles, Bangladeshis, and Somalians). Although as Bill points out, as soon as they walk through the clubs doors there just St Georges boxers.

Titles won::
No titles, I've only had two bouts but I've won them both.

What boxer are you like:
I'd have to say Amir Kahn because I'm quick with good hand speed.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
I came here with a freind. The people here were really nice to me and I found the boxing both intresting and enjoyable.

Best memory in boxing:
Winning my first bout was very special for me. It was a hard bout but I think I deserved the win. I worked very hard for it.

Worst memory in boxing:
I have no bad memories.

Toughest Bout So Far:
My first bout was tougher then my second. The boy was a southpaw and it took me a round or two to find my rhythm and work out how to beat him.

What is it you most like about your club
:
The people and trainers. I also get alot of 1 on 1 coaching which is great because the coaches really know what they're talking about.

Ambitions in Boxing:
To win a championship. Probably the Golden Belts.

Ricky Hatton. I like going on the attack, throwing big punches, people say I'm an agressive boxers. I like to keep the pace high.

Why Did You Start Boxing:
I've always wanted to be a boxer.

Toughest Bout So Far:
Boxing a Newham boy. I've had four skill bouts so far and in three of those bouts the boys weren't at my level but this boy was. He was able to match my speed and pace.

Best memory in boxing:
The times when the referee tells me to hold back. Its happened a couple of times in my skill bouts. Obviously your not allowed to beat them to convincingly.

Worst memory in boxing:
Tripping over my shoe laces in the gym.

What is it you most like about your club:
I get on really well with all the boys at the club.

Ambitions in Boxing:
World Champion. Simple as that.

Tommy Langford in Junior ABAs. He's the only boxer I've faced who was my height. That made it really tough and different to what I expected.

When I won the NACYPs I stopped everyone on my way except the England No 1.

Losing a very suspect decision to Alfie Morris in the 2004 Schoolboy Championships.
