ABA of England Boxing Tutor Course
Wednesday, 14-04-2010

Dear London ABA Coaches,

The Boxing Tutor Course is not an ABAE recognised pathway to coaching and has never been sold as one; it is endorsed by BABA, ABA of England, Scotland and Wales as a National programme.  Its aim is to reach people from the age of 5 years to introduce and encourage Boxing into areas where it’s hard to reach with a professional approach.  The Tutor Course allows ABAE registered Boxing Tutor to deliver the awards as per the lesson plans provided on the day, to people who may not have had the opportunity to get involved in Boxing before; therefore, by the nature of the awards it engages young people and Adults having access to the sport of Amateur Boxing (non contact).  All registered boxing tutors have an ABAE Boxing Tutor Registration book with their picture name and an in date sticker (similar to a coaching registration book).

Also please find attached the Boxing Educational Qualification for regional boxing club/school advertisement.  Remember the Boxing GCSE will require a boxing coach as a subject matter expert, if the schools are interested, they will have to engage with an ABA Club/Coach to get the young people through the Boxing GCSE in their school, that way we get a school club link, your boxing club could register as a ASDAN centere

The point to express to your region is the National Boxing Awards and Boxing Educational Qualification has been deliberately designed and written to link ABA Boxing Clubs/ Coaches to Schools and Youth Groups for those who want to work in this field.

As a lot of you are aware we deliver the ASDAN CoPE Boxing Educational Qualification (please find criteria attached) in the school that I work in (Charter Academy) as well as the National Boxing Awards programme in curriculum.  We have also actively been working with ASDAN, to work up and down the country to give Boxing Coaches/School Teachers and youth workers the opportunity to learn and get qualified to deliver the ASDAN CoPE qualification in Amateur Boxing, the Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy has piloted the qualification for the year 10’s and year 11’s in the Charter Academy in Portsmouth and after a year of delivery and a very effective meeting with ASDAN, we feel we are on the edge of qualifying our first graduates for the ASDAN CoPE Boxing GCSE at the end of this Academic year (July ’10).

Due to the success of the last academic year, ASDAN and myself have been running pilot ASDAN CoPE Courses, first in Portsmouth and then in Leicester. The next ASDAN CoPE courses are in London and Newcastle (please find attached application forms).   The Boxing qualification works well with disengaged youngsters and is very popular with mainstream school students.  I recommend that every boxing club send a coach or volunteer from their club to attend the educational course if they are interested with working in or with their local schools/ youth clubs in getting their young people/boxers a qualification in amateur boxing. You are reminded that you need 12 credits for a GCSE, our young boxers can get 6 of the credits (half a GCSE) by completing the GB National Boxing Awards programme.

For Example one of our students has completed the following for his qualification (Boxing GCSE):

Preliminary        Award                                                   1 credit
Standard           Awards                                                 1 credit

GB       Boxing Tutor Course                                           1 Credit
ABA     Young Judge Course                                          1 Credit
First Aide Qualification                                                   1 Credit
Cook a Healthy Meal                                                      1 Credit
Deliver a preliminary award to a group of students             1 credit
Deliver a presentation on advantages and disadvantages    1 credit
Of Amateur Boxing

Total                                                          12 Credits (all evidence and certification is put into a folder for assessment)

All the GB National Boxing Awards certificates and GB Boxing Tutor Course Certificates now read at the bottom of them the following:

“This certificate has a value of 1 credit towards ASDAN awards & qualifications”

The above statement allows schools that deliver any form of ASDAN be it Bronze Award, Wider key skills, CoPE Level 1, CoPE Level 2 (GCSE) or Level 3 (A Level) to use the GB boxing awards programme for our youngsters to get Educational qualifications.

The Boxing Education can start for as young as year 8 (13 yrs), in the Charter Academy next year we will be starting the youngsters on their Boxing GCSE at 13 yrs old, they would of completed the qualification in one or two years and ready to start their level 3 (“A” level Boxing Qualification).

ABAE has a GB Recreational Programme, we have a GB Educational programme and we already have a very successful Competitive programme with our domestic/National and International boxing.

Please feel free to come down for a visit when I am in your area, for more information or on any of the above or application forms please email or give me a ring.
